Definition
In gemology, the term 'culet' refers to a tiny facet at the base of a gemstone, directly opposite the top or the 'table' of the stone. Originally, the culet was added to prevent chipping of the gem's pointed pavilion during the setting process. However, in modern cut stones, a culet may be polished as a flat facet to ensure the maximum passage of light through the stone, thereby enhancing its brilliance and fire. The presence, size, and quality of a culet can significantly influence the overall appearance and light performance of a diamond or other faceted gemstones. While some stones are cut without a culet resulting in a sharp point, others may have a very small or medium culet to optimize the stone's optical properties.
