Definition
Discovered in 1905 in South Africa, the Cullinan Diamond holds the record as the largest gem-quality diamond ever unearthed, weighing an astonishing 3,106.75 carats. This illustrious diamond was subsequently cut into smaller stones, the largest two of which are part of the British Crown Jewels. The cutting process, which required exceptional skill, resulted in nine major stones (labelled Cullinan I to IX) and many smaller fragments, all of which display exceptional clarity and quality. The Cullinan I, or the Great Star of Africa, is mounted in the head of the Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross, while the Cullinan II is set in the front of the Imperial State Crown, both showcasing the historic and cultural significance of this extraordinary diamond.
